Assumed knowledge
Located in the national capital, Canberra, the Australian Defence Force
Academy (ADFA) is a major centre for higher education for the Australian
Defence Force (ADF). Within the Academy, the University of New South Wales
(UNSW) has established a college, known as UNSW Canberra at ADFA,
responsible for conducting academic programs and research. UNSW Canberra
offers undergraduate programs leading to UNSW Bachelor degrees in Arts,
Business, Engineering, Information Technology, and Science and Technology.
Where a specific degree lists a Year 12 subject as assumed knowledge, the
table will enable you to determine which Year 12 subject this equates to in
your state or territory. Requirements are expressed as minimum where there
is more than one level. For example, to satisfy the Mathematics requirement,
a NSW student would have to complete at least ‘Mathematics’, while a
Queensland student would have to complete at least ‘Mathematics B’.
A table listing the specific Year 12 subjects for each state and territory
that currently satisfy the UNSW Canberra at ADFA Assumed Knowledge
requirements can be found at http://sas.unsw.adfa.edu.au/future_students/
undergraduate/.
At UNSW Canberra at ADFA, all undergraduate students must be either:
■■ employed by the ADF as either midshipmen of the Royal Australian Navy,
officer cadets of the Australian Regular Army, or Royal Australian Air Force
and reside at the Academy
■■ mature-age officer applicants who are Defence Force personnel applying
for entry through service commissioning schemes or
■■ recipients of the Materiel Engineering Undergraduate Scholarship (MEUS).
These students are selected by Defence Materiel Organisation and their
university fees are Defence-sponsored. The MEUS is available for selection
into the Aeronautical, Electrical or Mechanical Engineering program.
While the Assumed Knowledge is the minimum requirement, Year 12
students are recommended to undertake higher levels of these subjects.
Offers made to applicants who have an ATAR below the
published cut-off
UNSW has a number of alternative pathways for admission, which may allow
2014 NSW and ACT Year 12 applicants to receive an offer to a course even
though they have an ATAR below the published cut-off. Refer to ‘Admission
requirements’ and section 3.6 ‘Educational Access Schemes’ in Part 1
for details.

QQ ENROLMENT
Acceptance of offer
As successful applicants are due to start their military training at UNSW
Canberra at ADFA in mid-January, most offers will be made in the 6 January
2015 round (January Round 1). You will receive full details of UNSW Canberra
acceptance and enrolment procedures with your UAC offer. Failure to follow
the outlined procedures will result in your offer lapsing after the specified
acceptance due date. Offers are accepted online via the UNSW website at
www.gettingstarted.unsw.edu.au
Advanced standing/academic credit
If you have already completed some tertiary study, you may be entitled
to credit for relevant subjects or, subject to military approval, for entry to
the second year of a degree. UNSW Canberra does not determine credit
transfer until an offer of admission has been made and accepted. For more
information, visit http://sas.unsw.adfa.edu.au/getting-started/
Enrolment dates
Enrolment will take place in early February 2015.
Deferment of offer
Refer to Table 6 in Part 1. You may wish to defer your enrolment and start
study in 2016. Deferring the commencement of your study at UNSW Canberra
is not automatic as this is conditional on obtaining approval for the deferral of
the commencement of service with the ADF and your success at medical and
psychological testing the following year.
For more information, contact your careers adviser at your local Defence
Force Recruiting Centre or visit www.defencejobs.gov.au
Fees and charges

at the Academy are exempt from Commonwealth student contributions. As
