MAIN PURPOSE OF JOB
Increasing prosperity and promoting sustainable global growth is one of the UK’s 3 Foreign Policy objectives. To
achieve this, the UK is working with China to support open markets, promote sustainable global growth, and
increase bilateral trade and investment. Covering China’s prosperous Pearl River Delta region as well as the
surrounding five provinces, the British Consulate-General Guangzhou is at the heart of this effort.
Working in the Economic Section, the successful candidate will take the lead on multiple areas of macro-economic
and trade policy analysis. The Economic Officer is responsible for ensuring the Consulate’s government and
business customers are fully briefed with strong analysis and data on the economy. Through building a wide
network of contacts, monitoring data, and studying expert analysis in the field, they will be expected to produce
high quality reporting on a range of issues, from the province’s special economic zones to its progress on the
planned industrial upgrading. The job holder will also have an important role to play working with the Consul
Economic and the Projects Officer in developing a portfolio of projects that help strengthen UK-China ties in
economic policy and promote an open, modern, and rebalanced Chinese economy. Furthermore, because of the
PRD’s high profile in the global economy, BCG Guangzhou has frequent high level visitors from the UK and the
successful applicant can expect to help prepare visits and briefings for those focussed on economic issues.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (What will the jobholder be expected to achieve?)
Report on economic issues in South China to improve UK government understanding of the region
and identify opportunities for UK businesses. This will involve researching, analysing and
producing high quality written reports on economic developments, the business environment,
and progress on implementing economic reforms in South China. Jobholder will also contribute a
South China perspective to nationwide economic analysis conducted by BE Beijing.

Build a wide range of economic contacts. The jobholder will build a network of working level
economic contacts in local government and the private sector to assist with analysis and identify
opportunities for co-operation.

Develop a portfolio of economic and financial sector projects to promote UK-China co-operation
in areas of mutual benefit. The jobholder will advise on potential projects which help China’s
development as well as open up opportunities for UK business. For example, providing UK
expertise on public private finance to Chinese government officials. They will also identify
potential Chinese partner organisations for project work, and work with Consul Economic and
Projects Officer in developing project bids.

Develop programmes and briefings for high level visitors from the UK. The jobholder will work
with the Consul Economic to prepare programmes and economic briefing for UK government
ministers and senior officials, and accompany them while they are here.

 Bachelor’s degree in economics or related field.

gross starting salary for this position before all deductions is RMB 14,283/ month for Chinese Nationals and an
abated monthly salary of RMB 20,417/ month for British Nationals and spouses/ partners of diplomats with W
(diplomatic) visa. We also offer excellent development opportunities and a 22-day annual leave entitlement in pro
rata. Conditioned working hours is 35 hours/ week from Monday to Friday and flexible working can be arranged
