“Stir up the inner-fire, the gift God gave you….”
2Timothy 1:6
In honor of the up and coming Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, here are some
of my favorite words of wisdom from the reverend doctor. Some of them
are worth meditating on.
Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that.
Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.
Faith is taking the first step even when you don't see the
whole staircase.
The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in
moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands
at times of challenge and controversy.
We must develop and maintain the capacity to forgive. He who
is devoid of the power to forgive is devoid of the power to love.
There is some good in the worst of us and some evil in the
best of us. When we discover this, we are less prone to hate
our enemies.
An individual has not started living until he can rise above the
narrow confines of his individualistic concerns to the broader
concerns of all humanity.

Human progress is neither automatic nor inevitable... Every
step toward the goal of justice requires sacrifice, suffering,
and struggle; the tireless exertions and passionate concern of
dedicated individuals.
I refuse to accept the view that mankind is so tragically bound
to the starless midnight of racism and war that the bright daybreak of peace and brotherhood can never become a reality...
I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have
the final word.
We must learn to live together as brothers or perish together
as fools.
Until later…..grace and peace to you! Rik

Stephen Ministry Sunday
Stephen Ministry will be the subject of our worship service on January 19th. We will highlight the
contributions that Stephen Ministry has made to VUMC since 2011. Our guest speaker will be
LANCE WARD, Pastor of Congregational Care at Crossings Community Church. Lance has also
served as a hospice chaplain and was previously the pastor of a small church in the Dallas area.
Lance has helped us with continuing education and is a terrific speaker. We hope that all of you
will come and learn more about Stephen Ministry and the impact it has at Village.
Student Ministries
Youth Lock-In Jan 17th at 8pm - come to the church for food, games, and movies during our annual winter
lock-in. Grades 6th and up are all invited. We will spend the night at the church: stay up all night, or sleep—it’s
your choice! Lock-in will end at 8am on Saturday morning.
Camp Dates Announced:
Youth Force Oklahoma City: All Christians are called to be in service. Full immersion service mission work can
be life changing. Village UMC Youth support two mission camps each summer. Youth Force is a local mission
experience that meets for a week within our state. A construction ministry, Youth Force groups youth and adults
from a variety of churches to provide home improvements for elderly and disabled people. This camp is open to
students entering 7th grade through graduated high school seniors. Youth Force will be held at OCU June 813th. Watch this space for more information. Grades 7-12 are all welcome to attend Youth Force.
ASP: Appalachia Service Project is made up of groups who become a part of the communities in the Appalachia
Mountains where they work each summer. Taking on large construction projects, ASP groups work throughout
the summer to make homes “Warmer, Safer and Drier.” Because of the maturity required to enter into another
culture, students are required to be entering 9th grade through graduated high school seniors. The students
that travel from Village UMC work together on the job sites. The dates for our trip this year are July 18-July 27th.
Be on the lookout for more information in the coming weeks.
Be sure to join us each and every Wednesday at 5:30pm in the Youth Room for games, a short reflective lesson, maybe a snack, and just plain hang out time.

Jesus in the Temple
Children in Amazing Voyage will begin a 6-week
study of "Jesus in the Temple" on February 2.
They'll explore the Bible story of Jesus in the
Temple (Luke 2:41-52) and learn that “God's
'house' is a comfortable place to learn, ask
questions, and discover God's plan for us.”
Amazing Voyage is for children in Kindergarten
through Grade 5. It meets at 9:15 every Sunday
in the Jungle Room upstairs. At 9:30 children
rotate by grade level through experiences in art,
cooking, games, movies, science and storytelling.
UMW Circle Meetings
Martha Circle will meet at the church on Tuesday,
January 21st, at 10:00 a.m.
Ruth Circle will meet at 1:00 p.m. at the church
on Tuesday, January 21st.
Our homemade Cinnamon Rolls will be sold
on Sunday, January 26th. Help support UMW by
purchasing one or more of these goodies!
Special congratulations to
Bill and Wanda Noble
who celebrated their 70th
wedding anniversary on
January 13th.
New Women’s Bible Study
On Wednesday evening, January 29th, at 6:15p.m., a new 6-week study of
Liz Curtis Higgs’ book, “Bad Girls of the Bible” will begin. The study will be
led by Valarie Robertson, who writes:
“If you have never heard Liz or seen her speak, you are in for a treat.
She is hilariously witty & charming, and so knowledgeable about the
women of the Bible...I promise you will fall in love with her just like I did.”
Here’s a little additional info about “Bad Girls of the Bible”:
Women everywhere marvel at the “Good Girls” in Scripture. We admire the faithfulness of Ruth, the
courage of Esther, and the humility of Mary. Yet when we look in our hearts, we may find the selfishness
of Sapphira, the deception of Delilah, or Jezebel’s take-charge pride instead! What’s a Good Girl to do?
Learn from our biblical sisters and their disastrous mistakes, and by God’s grace, choose a better, more
redemptive path.
Intriguing subject! Please let Valarie know that you plan to attend by Wednesday, January 22nd, so
that the books may be ordered in time for them to arrive by the 29th. You may email Valarie at
[email protected], or call and leave a message for her at the church.

The Well
Come be a part of VUMC’s Contemporary Worship Service “The Well” beginning at
9:30 a.m. in Fellowship Hall, where we celebrate worship through
audio and visual media. Led by Worship Leader, Trey Witzel, “The Well” offers a
blend of classic and modern worship for all ages.
Because we all worship in different ways, you now have a choice of two worship
venues at VUMC. If you prefer a more relaxed worship experience, join us for a
cup of coffee and muffin prior to gathering for praise and worship. We believe
that all worship should be Spirit-led if you want to be Spirit-fed. So invite someone
to worship and meet us at “The Well,” where living water flows to all who are
thirsty . .and thirst no more!
