NEWS AND NOTES
CHRISTIAN HIGH SCHOOL
FEBRUARY 2015
From the Principal
About three weeks ago I started trying to make my Valentine’s Day
reservations…to no avail. Though I thought I was way ahead of the game, it
turns out there are plenty of other guys out there who are far more zealous
than I. I mean, come on! Five weeks in advance is not enough time to get it
done? Give me a break!
February seems to come faster and faster with each passing year. Stores are
filled with Valentine’s cards, candy, and stuffed animals, and red and pink
seems to abound everywhere. It is the month when people want to feel
loved. While making reservations at a nice restaurant may be important,
there’s a lot more to love than just that.
It’s kind of sad how the world commercializes and defines love. It is often
viewed and portrayed as this problematic, unsolvable mystery. It is seen as
such a shallow and temperamental thing. It is often viewed as something
that creates more problems than it actually solves.
Though we may be the minority, I believe that Christians view love as the
ultimate problem solver. When we think about relationships, whether they
are with spouses, relatives, friends or acquaintances, the way we choose to
love defines those relationships. One of the things I remind our students of
all the time is the importance of loving one another as Christ loves us. We
would have very few, if any, problems in our school if students were more
cognizant of this.
I Corinthians 13:4-7 should be our GPS when it comes to love: Love suffers
long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not
puffed up; does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked,
thinks no evil; does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; bears
all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. (NKJV)
Don’t you wish it were that simple? Even though the guidelines are clearly
laid out for us to follow in this passage, one of the hardest things to do is
put aside our own selfish desires and put others first. My prayer for our
students is that they take a deep look at these few verses and really try to
apply them to their own relationships.
