Maha Shivaratri - the night of the worship of Lord Siva
Maha Shivaratri, the night of the worship of Lord Siva, occurs on the 13th night/14th day of the new moon during
the dark half of the month of Phalguna or Maagh according to the Hindu calendar. Maha Shivaratri is an auspicious
and important festival. Hindus celebrate this religious festival with great enthusiasm. It is also popular as 'Shivratri'
or 'Great Night of Lord Siva'. Lord Siva’s family is composed of his wife Goddess Uma (Sakti) and their two sons Lord
Ganesha and Lord Kartikeya (Subrahmanya). Their respective mounts are the bull, the lion, the mouse and the
Numerous interesting and intriguing mythological stories are believed pertaining to the celebration to Mahashivratri.
Many believe that Maha Shivaratri signifies the auspicious night when Lord Siva performed the dance 'Tandava' that
led to the creation, conservation and devastation of the universe.
The Festivity
Devotees observe a strict fast on this day. Some do not even take a drop of water and they keep vigil all night. The
Siva Lingam is worshipped throughout the night by performing abhishekam with milk, curd, honey, rose water, etc.,
whilst the chanting of the Mantra "Om Namah Shivaya" continues. Offerings of Bael (Bilva) leaves are made to the
Lingam as Bael leaves are considered very sacred and dear to Lord Siva.
