Milwaukee - Success shouldn't be defined by zip code. Two leading Wisconsin
Republican lawmakers are looking to remove many of the barriers that may slow
economic success for people simply because they aren't in high performing zip codes.
On Wednesday, State Representative Dale Kooyenga (R-Brookfield) and State Senator
Alberta Darling (R-River Hills) unveiled their New Opportunities for Milwaukee Plan.
Representative Kooyenga says the agenda grew out of ideas from people in the
"Most people just need a chance to succeed and they will be successful," Kooyenga
said, "After talking with people throughout Milwaukee, we've put together some of
their ideas to knock down whatever barriers are preventing them from succeeding."
The New Opportunities for Milwaukee Agenda is designed to boost economic
opportunities for people living in Milwaukee zip codes with more than 10 percent
unemployment. Representative Kooyenga and Senator Darling spent many hours in
schools, businesses, churches, and community centers in high unemployment areas
over the past four years. Senator Darling says these areas need new ideas and we
should abandon the status quo.
"When Milwaukee succeeds, Wisconsin succeeds," Darling said, "We need to start with
making sure kids attend great schools and make sure adults have an opportunity to
work at a great job. This plan sets the groundwork for both of those things to happen."
