TEMPLATEC- Individual Placement Description Northern Deanery Foundation School (NDFS) Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust Individual Placement Description Placement The department The type of work to expect and learning opportunities F2 in Medicine Medicine has a commitment on all three sites in Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust (Wansbeck General Hospital, North Tyneside General Hospital and Hexham General Hospital). It includes Cardiology Respiratory Medicine GI Medicine Acute Elderly Medicine General Medicine (Hexham) – a separate sheet has been prepared for this rotation Educational opportunities Specific Skills clinical method (history taking, examination and differential diagnosis) and diagnostic testing acute and chronic management of patients with medical problems including patient counselling, therapeutics and appropriate use of the skills of allied health professionals including specialist nurses clinical skills (e.g. lumbar puncture, chest and peritoneal drains, central lines) longitudinal care of ill patients assessment of all patients arriving on the ward, arranging appropriate tests for the patients and checking results co-ordinating treatment and investigative schedules working with and providing day to day supervision of the F1 doctor on your team providing teaching for F1 doctors and medical students and any other playing a central role in co-ordinating discharge planning for the patient. Generic Skills Team working including handovers and presentations. Communication skills. Liaison with the wider hospital teams such laboratories, pain team, infection control, palliative care and oncology. Note keeping Medico-legal issues. Ethical issues surrounding treatment of disabled and elderly, for example DNR orders, nutrition and end of life issues. Medical F2s usually work 6 weekend days (0830 – 2100 or 0900 – 1700) and 9 weekdays (0900 – 2100) during the 4 month rotation. Standard working day 0900 - 1700. There is no night-time commitment in this placement. The employer for this post is Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust North Tyneside is the largest of Northumbria's Hospitals serving a population of 250,000. The hospital is modern and well kept and has an ambitious building programme. It has around 500 in patient beds. Wansbeck is on the outskirts of Ashington and is a modern hospital with a new wing recently opened. The hospital serves a population of around 250,000 across a wide geographic area.
