Estudio histórico y cultural de la literatura inglesa referido esencialmente al periodo que discurre desde principios de
siglo hasta los años inmediatamente después de la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Se estudiarán los autores y obras que
conciernen al desarrollo de las vanguardias, los feminismos y la literatura de guerra.
Programa Básico
El estudio de los fundamentos de la literatura inglesa del s.XX, dando especial importancia a la primera mitad de dicho
siglo.Se requiere un conocimiento avanzado de la lengua inglesa y de la literatura inglesa anterior al siglo XX.

1. A survey of the historical, social and cultural context.
2. Poetry in the early Twentieth Century: from Thomas Hardy to the poetry of the Great War. (Hardy, Thomas, Owen)
3. The internationalization of literature and the challenge to the notion of Englishness and Britishness (Joseph Conrad,
E.M. Forster)
4. Modernism and the novel: (Lawrence, Woolf and Joyce)
5. Modernism in poetry: Imagism and Vorticism
6. Social and political concerns in the 1930s: (George Orwell and Aldous Huxley)
7. The Second World War and its aftermath: the end of the Empire.

G. GREEN, "The Third Man" (1950)
We shall also discuss a variety of poems by Thomas Hardy, Edward Thomas, Rupert Brooke, Wilfred Owen, Ezra
Pound, T.S. Eliot W.H. Auden and Dylan Thomas, together with a selection from James Joyce"s "Ulysses"

Oral presentations can deal with any topic related to the contents of the course.
Assessment of the presentations will evaluate clarity, confidence and ability to communicate as well as the content.
Reading from a paper is not allowed.
The final exam will consist on a multiple choice questionnaire plus essay questions about the topics covered
throughout the course and extracts from the readings.
Assessment will bear into account adjustment to the question, coherence and structure, reference to specific facts and
examples from texts.
