Programa Básico
The first part of the course is necessarily elementary because of the extreme differences of computer literacy among
the students: though some have their own computers and considerable know-how, others have no experience with
computers at all. The aim is nevertheless to interest all the students by giving explanations of the basics but adding
information that is likely to be unfamiliar even to the more advanced students. By the end of it, students should know
how computers have developed since the early days and what the main components of a typical contemporary PC are,
both internally and externally, hardware and software. They should understand why such a computer is called ´digital´
and what the basic principles of its logic and programming are. The second part of the course consists mostly of
learning to use several representative software packages. By the end of it, students should have a fair idea of what
kind of software is available and how effective it is. A subsidiary aim throughout the course is to teach students to use
the correct technical terminology and phraseology for discourse about computers.

Lexicographic aids: WordSmith Tools Terminology management software: Trados Concordancers: MicroConcord,
MultiConcord Corpora on CD-ROM or the Internet: the British National Corpus Bilingual corpora: MLCC Translation
memory software: Trados, Bitexxt Machine translation systems: SYSTRAN The Internet: browsers, e-mail
Methodology Part 1 consists of classroom expositions and of videos in the Aula Multimedia Part 2 consists of hands-on
experience in the Aula Multimedia There will be regular assignments, either on paper or on diskette. The working
language will be English.
Programa Práctico
Students will be evaluated on the basis of regular assignments and a final examination. The final examination will be
partly a paper exam and partly a practical assignment to be carried out in the Aula Multimedia.
